Volume 23, Plate XVIII / Mammalia (Mammals)
Sea-Lion of Forster
Phoca Jubata
The Sea-Lion of Forster is a maned otary, the male ten to twelve feet long and very thick, with no woolly fur under its coarse hair, a small head, mastiff-like muzzle, long whiskers and large inflamed-looking eyes, the fore-limbs mere black fins. Sluggish bullies that snort and flee rather than attack, they live in herds of a male with many females, fight savagely for their harems, and swallow stones while fasting ashore to breed.
