Locusta Cristata &. L. Flava

1. Locusta Cristata. A large species sometimes nearly four inches long, this locust has a brown head and eyes, an olive-green thorax ridged along the back and marked with four transverse impressions, and greyish-green tegmina variegated with numerous small light-yellow quadrate spots. The wings are blue with black spots and a black posterior margin, the abdomen red above with yellow spots and yellowish-green beneath, and the hinder legs green with white-spotted thighs; it is a native of South America.
2. Locusta Flava. This ash-coloured species has an unequal thorax bearing a dorsal ridge and tegmina clouded with rusty-brown, each marked with two light-coloured bars. The wings are a fine yellow at the base, then crossed by a curved band of blackish brown with the extremity transparent and unspotted, the posterior thighs bluish-black internally and the tibiae red; it is found at the Cape of Good Hope.
