Heleona Fenestrata & Anthomyza Tiresia

  1. Heleona Fenestrata. A rare Australian member of the Anthroceridae, the upper wings hyaline clouded with violet-blue spots and waved bands, the hinder wings with violet-blue marks, a broad marginal band, and a central band of orange spots, some angular and some round. The head, thorax, and abdomen are orange and the antennae black; it was twice seen on the north-west coast of Australia, in shady woods and in nutmeg-woods adjoining Brunswick Bay.
  2. Anthomyza Tiresia. A Tropical American day-flier measuring three and three-quarter inches, the upper wings deep black with two broad oblique deep yellow bands, a yellow patch on the hinder border, and white spots near base and margin, the hind wings yellow with a broad black border bearing white spots. The abdomen is brown; these slow heavy fliers counterfeit death when touched and discharge a brown liquor, closely resembling the Heliconian butterflies of Brazil.
