Brown Bear

Ursus Arctos

About four feet long and two and a half high at the shoulder, though sometimes far larger, the Brown Bear is a square built, powerful animal with a large head, broad muzzle, convex forehead, small eyes, and abundant shaggy brown hair, more rufous on the back in summer. It rears and walks erect with ease, will suffocate dogs or men clawed within its arms, and was formerly hunted as a princely sport with spears, hounds, and noisy instruments.
