Arran Brown & Scotch Argus Butterflies

1. Arran Brown Butterfly. Spanning eighteen to twenty-two lines, it is brown with an abbreviated reddish band near the tip of each wing, bearing black white-pupilled eyes that lack pupils in the male. Beneath, the hind wings show an irregular white band and three ringed eyes; very rare in Britain, it has been found only in the Isle of Arran, though common in several northern lands of Europe.
2. Scotch Argus Butterfly. Brown, often nearly black, each fore wing bears a red band with usually four bluish-pupilled eyes, the hind wings a short, indistinct band of three small eyes. Its light green, striped caterpillar has a reddish head; first found in Arran, it now occurs abundantly in Dumfriesshire, Roxburghshire, and elsewhere in southern Scotland, and in the limestone country near Newcastle.
