Elephant of the Lena
Fossil Elephant of Siberia
Found throughout Russia and especially eastern Siberia and the Arctic marshes, the Mammoth yields tusks ten to fifteen feet long, much curved with a spiral turn, prized as fossil ivory little inferior to the living kind. The Lena carcass, a male nine feet four inches high and sixteen feet long, bore a dark gray skin clothed in reddish wool and black hairs, with a maned neck, marking it an inhabitant of cold regions.
