Three-Banded Sand-Grouse

Pterocles tricinctus

A sand-grouse of the African deserts, smaller than a partridge but elegantly marked, the male with white front crossed by a black band, an ochre crown spotted black, and back and wings barred and washed fulvous. Three semicircular breast bands of chestnut, white and black cross below, the belly banded black and greyish-white, the legs feathered to the toes; the female lacks the head black and breast bands, total length ten inches.
