Rabbit or Burrowing Hare

Lepus Cuniculus

The smallest British hare, with proportionally shorter limbs, ears an inch shorter than the head, and fur of light reddish-brown tinged with grey above and greyish-white beneath, the upper tail black and the ears black-tipped. Differing from its kin by digging subterranean burrows, it congregates in vast numbers on sandy heaths and downs, runs with celerity, feeds on grass and corn, is extremely prolific bearing five to eight several times yearly, and yields esteemed flesh and useful fur.
