Volume 22, Plate XXXIV / Mammalia (Mammals)
Roe Deer
Cervus Capreolus
Much inferior in size to the red deer but excelling it in activity, this most elegantly formed quadruped has full body, long slender limbs, tapering head, long pointed ears, and an extremely short tail, the close stiff fur yellowish-brown above and light yellowish-grey beneath, with a white space under the tail. Residing in pairs in thickets and dense woods of the Highlands and northern England, it bounds with astonishing agility and produces one or two spotted fawns in April.
