Grey Seal
Halichœrus Griseus
The Grey Seal, type of a new genus, has a long form and recurved silvery-grey hair so set that it appears uniform from before and sooty brown from behind, the blotches showing chiefly in side view and growing indistinct with age. A large aged female weighed upwards of five hundred pounds and measured over seven feet, its stomach holding sharp pebbles; it prevails on the southern shores of Ireland and in Orkney and the Hebrides.
