Æshna Grandis & Stilbopteryx Costalis

1. Æshna Grandis. This genus includes the largest native dragonflies, known by the horizontal wings at rest and the long narrow abdomen never approaching the thorax in diameter, the larva and nymph more elongated than in Libellula with about half a dozen British species. AE. grandis is two and a half inches long, fulvous brown with two yellow stripes on each side of the thorax and the abdomen variegated with green or yellow, occurring occasionally on moors and marshes throughout the country.
2. Stil­bopteryx Costalis. First described by Mr. Newman, this insect belongs to the family Myrmeleonidae and differs from the typical Myrmeleon chiefly in its very short palpi, the maxillary pair having only four joints, and in the neuration of the posterior wings, the fourth longitudinal nerve not being furcate and the fifth extending well beyond it. It is a native of Australia, the figured specimen preserved in the Rev. Mr. Hope’s collection.
