Hyalophora Cecropia
A large American silk-moth above half a foot across, the wings dark reddish-brown with orange-brown bases, whitish bands, large kidney-shaped white discoidal spots, a transverse orange band, and a black eye-spot near the tip with blood-coloured stains. The green caterpillar bears yellow points and blue spots, feeds on the wild American plum, and spins a large yellowish-brown cocoon whose silk has been carded and knit into stockings.
