Deiopeia bella, Cydosia nobilitella, Chloridea Rhexiæ & Alaria Gauræ

  1. Deiopeia bella. A pretty North American moth from near New York expanding about an inch and nine lines, the anterior wings fine yellow traversed by narrow irregular white bands enclosing black dots, with a marginal row of black dots and pure white fringe. The hinder wings are scarlet irregularly margined with black behind, the fringe white, the thorax and abdomen nearly white, the thorax spotted with black.
  2. Cydosia nobilitella. A lovely moth one inch and a quarter across, the anterior wings shining steel-blue bearing about fourteen white marks, minute white dots near the apex, a rich orange costal spot, and three orange transverse bars, the hind wings white with a broad black margin. The thorax is steel-blue with six white spots and the abdomen steel-blue, the legs black with white marks; specimens come from Curacao and St. Domingo.
  3. Chloridea Rhexiæ. A finely coloured Georgian moth resembling Tortrix prasinana, the upper wings green with three transverse yellow stripes, a kidney-shaped disk mark, and a smaller rounded one, the thorax green, the abdomen and hind wings white tinted with reddish-brown. The dull yellowish-green caterpillar bears a white and a yellow side-line with reddish segment-spots, eating the buds and blossoms of Rhexia and tobacco and proving pernicious to the latter; it is not common.
  4. Alaria Gauræ. A delicately tinted moth, the ground colour white with the wings tinted red, that colour deepening at the margin of the upper pair and forming a transverse band beyond the middle, the crested thorax inclining to yellow. Its long slender sixteen-footed caterpillar is yellow with white underparts and a black band on each segment, feeding on Gaura biennis, where the resting moth’s colours so resemble the blossoms as to be scarcely distinguishable.
