1. Calo­soma syco­phanta. Ten or eleven lines long, violet-black on all parts except the elytra and sometimes glossed with green, the head and thorax minutely punctured and wrinkled with two deep impressions between the antennae. The shield-shaped elytra are rich green glossed with golden yellow and marked with closely placed punctured striae; it is frequent in middle and southern Europe but very scarce in Britain, where indigenous specimens are prized.
2. Elphrus riparius. A small brilliant beetle, brassy green with coppery reflections, the head and thorax thickly punctured and the latter grooved, the elytra minutely punctured and ornamented with four rows of faint purple ocellated spots ringed with metallic lustre. The under side is bronzed green except the pale reddish-yellow tibiae; it frequents marshy places and lake and pond margins, running swiftly in the heat of day, and is common throughout Britain.
3. Mor­molyce phyl­lodes. Remarkably peculiar in form, with narrow elongated head and thorax, the latter scolloped at the sides, and flat dilated elytra reticulated and broadly projecting beyond the abdomen, recalling withered leaves. The tibiae are crooked, the general colour blackish brown and somewhat shining, and it varies greatly in size from two to three and a quarter inches long; it is a native of Java, occurring in considerable plenty in some parts.
