Press
This word has three meanings, according to its use, among printers. It is applied to the general body of journalism, which, for the sake of brevity, is called the Press; it is applied to the machine which produces the impression—the press; it is also applied, in a confined sense, to the operation of working the latter machine, which is called “press” in contradistinction to “case,” which includes the various processes connected with the art of composition. With the first of these meanings we have little to do in this “Dictionary of Typography.” The existing laws relating to the press, with a sketch of the rise and progress of the press will be found in previous pages. We shall simply refer to the press as a machine, and to press as the art of using that machine, under the heads respectively of Presses and Prsswork.
