Grayling & Wall Butterfly

Hipparchia Semele & H. Megæra

  1. & 2. The Grayling. One of the larger browns, sometimes spanning two inches and six lines, it is brown with a pale yellow band on the fore wings bearing two white-pupilled eyes, fuller in the female than the male. Both caterpillar and chrysalis are light green; the butterfly frequents rocky, stony places and occurs plentifully in such spots, as on the sides of Arthur’s Seat.
  2. Wall Butterfly. The fore wings are orange-yellow inclining to brown, crossed by dark bands and bearing a large white-pupilled eye near the tip, the hind wings dark brown with a row of three to five eyes. Its pale green, white-lined caterpillar is pubescent; far from scarce, the butterfly appears to be found in all parts of the country, on the wing in April, July, and August.
