Pale & Scarce Clouded Yellow Butterflies

1. Pale Clouded Yellow Butterfly. Generally larger than its near ally, the male is fine sulphur-yellow and the female nearly white, both with a broad black wing border almost divided by a row of spots. Its green caterpillar bears black spots and feeds on leguminous plants, and the butterfly, decidedly rarer, keeps chiefly to the south-east coast in Kent, Sussex, and Suffolk.
2. Scarce Clouded Yellow Butterfly. Both sexes are a fine sulphureous yellow, the male deeply edged with black on both wings, the female showing yellow spots within her border. Doubt long hung over its right to a British place, but since it became easy to identify it has been reported near Ipswich, in Sussex, and in meadows where the Avon meets the Severn.
