Resembling the European roe in shape but nearly one-fifth larger, the Muntjak of the eastern islands stands about two feet two inches at the shoulder and is reddish-brown of varying intensity, with white inner thighs and a face marked by two black lines and skin folds forming a V, whence the name Rib-faced Deer. It frequents elevated grounds near forests, feeds on grasses, and when hunted flees swiftly in a circle, defending itself fiercely with its tusks.
