Tapir of the Andes
Tapirus pinchaque
Found among the higher regions of the Andes, this Tapir nearly equals the American kind in size, measuring about five feet six inches long and two feet nine at the shoulder, but bears thick, long, blackish brown hair of a bay tint, no mane, and a round neck. A white spot marks the chin and upper lip, the ears lack a white border, hairless spots appear on the haunches, and it fed upon a sort of bamboo and an Espeletia.
