Pytilia phænicoptera

An entirely new species seen in but a single specimen, separated from its allies by a short tail and a lengthened bill shaped like that of Euplectes. The upper parts are light grey inclining to brown, all the wing feathers save the scapulars deeply margined with rich scarlet, the rump and upper covers entirely crimson, and the under parts nearly white with transverse cinereous bands upon the sides, the whole only four inches long.
