Crimson-Shouldered Caterpillar-Catcher (Male)

Campephaga phœnicia

A caterpillar-catcher whose sexes differ so remarkably they could scarcely be thought one, proven by a moulting young bird mixing both plumages. The adult male is rich glossy blue-black save for vivid crimson shoulders and lesser wing-covers, with thick prickly feathers on the lower back; the female is brown barred above with black and white, the quills broadly edged with yellow, and the white under parts crescented with black.
