Papilio Memnon & P. Æneas

1. Papilio Memnon. The forewings expand about five inches, blackish with greyish rays and a blood-red or yellow basal patch, the hindwings waved and bearing a broad white band and a row of black spots; this applies to a female variety once called Agenor. The male lacks the basal red spot and shows a greenish reflection, and the green caterpillar with white bands feeds on Citrus; common in China and the islands of the Indian Ocean.
2. Papilio Æneas. Representative of a South American group whose expanded width exceeds double its length, this species shows velvet-black forewings with a quadrangular green spot and small whitish marks, and hindwings with a large discoidal patch of red and carmine, dentated and notched with red. The forewings span about three and a quarter inches, the body is black with red-spotted sides, and it abounds in Surinam and other parts of South America.
