Volume 18, Plate XXIX / Entomology (Insects)
Urania Sloanus & U. Leilus
- Urania Sloanus. Expanding about two and a half to three inches, the surface deep black, the forewings each with six or seven golden-green transverse lines and a bifid green band near the middle, the hindwings with a central band of bright coppery-red and a gilded-green abdominal margin, the black tail bearing emerald-green spots. The underside corresponds with paler green; it bears the name of Sir Hans Sloane, is accounted rare, and has been found only in the West Indian Islands.
- Urania Leilus. Larger than the preceding, often four inches across, the ground colour deep velvet-black on both sides, the forewings with eight or nine slender curved green lines of silky lustre and the usual median band sometimes branching toward the costa. A band of light green runs across the hindwings, deeply indented and often interrupted by patches of ground colour, the tail nearly white with pure white fringe, the body robust and rayed with emerald green; it is pretty abundant in Surinam.
