Charcharias vulgaris

A fish supposed to have a particular predilection for human flesh, though this is difficult to establish and is perhaps explicable by an extreme voracity, a man being fortunate to escape its reach with only the loss of a limb. To seize its prey it must turn upon its side, and daring men have plunged a knife into its body during this attitude, while its teeth in all forms of the family are most formidable, sharp, hard and cutting.
