Newfoundland Dog, Original Breed
Canis Terræ Novæ
The original Newfoundland is a handsome, powerful water-dog, longer in the back than the Esquimaux race, with a fuller muzzle, partially drooping ears, and long uncurled fur, the native stock chiefly black with rust-coloured spots above each eye and a little white on feet and tail-tip. Nearly semi-palmated, it swims, dives, and endures water beyond any other dog, excels in harness and as a guard, and rivals the best sheep-dogs in sagacity.
