Asinus equuleus

So intermediate between horse and ass in appearance and voice that its placement is provisional, this diminutive animal from the Chinese frontiers stood under three feet, with a straight Arab-like profile, small mouth, short black-tipped ears, and upright coarse mane. Yellowish red clay in colour with a dorsal line, shoulder bar, cross streaks over the knees and hocks, and black lower legs, it neighed ending in an ass-like roar and proved docile enough to carry a rider.
