Dauw

Hippotigris Burchelli

About thirteen and a half hands at the shoulder, the Dauw has a round body, robust legs, an arched black crest surmounted by a five-inch banded mane, ears with one black bar and white tip, and a semi-equine white tail near three feet long. Light bay over head, neck, body, and croup with white below, marked with black streaks divided by brown lines, it inhabits the plains north of the Gareep in herds and is speared by mounted hunters.
