Asterisk

The Asterisk (*) is the chief of the reference marks, which presents itself to the eye more readily than the others, on account of its having its figure on the top, and leaving a blank below, which makes it superior. It sometimes denotes an hiatus, in which the number of asterisks is multiplied according to the largeness of the chasm. Aranged in this form () they are used in circulars and handbills to draw attention to some particular announcement. Technically, they are called Stars.
