Bow the letter

This term was formerly applied to the bending of the bad letters taken from a forme in correcting, lest they be used again. The best plan, however, is to break all that are defective, so that they may be placed in the “shoe” at once, and that time may not be afterwards wasted in weeding them out of the forme.
