Inserting a series of numerals denoting the folios of a work. The pagination is consecutive, generally, throughout the volume; but occasionally, when books are issued in parts, each of them has its own separate pagination. The ordinary pagination is done with Arabic numerals, the even numbers being placed on the left hand page and the odd numbers on the right. The preface and introductory matter has its pagination usually in Roman numerals.
