Planer

A block of beech or other hard wood, perfectly smooth and even on the face, used for planing down (q.v.) the type in a forme. A useful size for general purposes is nine inches long, four and a-half inches broad, and two inches deep. For newspaper work larger sizes are occasionally employed. A groove usually runs along the two longer edges, to enable the workman to handle it more readily.
