Notes placed in the outer margin of a page, as in law work, appeal case, Parliamentary Bills, &c., which generally contain a short summary of the paragraph against which they are placed. The first line should be exactly opposite the line of text to which they refer. If the measure in which they are set be very narrow they may be in lines of various lengths to avoid unsightly spacing.
