’Stab

An abbreviation of establishment. A man who is “on ’stab” receives establishment wages, i.e., regular fixed weekly wages, irrespective of the nature or amount of his work, and is, therefore, in exactly an opposite position to one who is “on piece,” who is paid only by the job and according to what he performs.
