Spotted Saw-Billed Humming-Bird

Ramphodon nævius

Unusual among its kind, this bird carries a strong broad bill edged with recurved teeth, plainly fashioned for seizing some slippery prey, though the manner of its use remains unknown. Discovered in the mountains near Rio Janeiro, it measures about five inches and a half, olive green above with reddish-brown auriculars, and its female has never been described.
