Bar-Tailed Humming-Bird

Trochilus sparganurus

A splendid species from Peru and interior Brazil, remarkable for its tail of ten broad feathers, each exceeding the last, of brilliant reddish-orange with brazen lustre and a broad black bar at each tip, appearing barred when closed. The upper parts are golden-green save a madder-tinted rump, the under surface bright emerald-green to the belly, then dull brownish-green and whitish vent, the supposed female duller with a shorter tail.
