Blue-Bellied Saw-Billed Humming-Bird

Throchilus thalassinus

A native of Mexico, where it is accounted rare, this saw-bill measures about five inches, its general colour a deep green with golden metallic lustre, while the throat and a longitudinal patch upon the belly glow a rich azure-blue, the throat feathers scaly and changing to velvet-black. The tail bears a steel-blue lustre crossed by a deep indigo band near the tip, the bill and feet black, with younger or female birds showing duller grey flanks and reddish-white coverts.
