Volume 1, Plate XI / Ornithology (Birds)
Ruby-Crested Humming-Bird
Trochilus moschitus
Among the most splendid of the family, this bird carries a short crest that shifts from sombre brown to coppery lustre and then to the richest ruby red, while its scaly throat changes from green to brilliant topaz. About three inches and a half long, brown across the back and breast with a white vent, it ranges widely through the West Indies.
