Volume 1, Plate XIV / Ornithology (Birds)
Natterer’s Humming-Bird
Trochilus scutatus
Sent from the interior of Brasil, this remarkable bird bears two almost downy tufts of deep indigo blue springing below the eyes to form a ruff, thought perhaps to appear only in the breeding season. The forehead is bright green and scaly, parted from the duller green hind head by a band of velvety black, and a shining green gorget displays upon the indigo breast.
