Violet Fork-Tailed Humming-Bird
Trochilus furcatus
One of the oldest known and of wide range through Brasil, Guiana, Jamaica, and Cayenne, this species is curiously still known only in the male. Its bill is strong, slightly bent, and deep black, the upper parts golden green, the wings and tail inclining to violet purple, with a throat patch of beautiful amethystine purple and pure white underparts tinged green on the flanks.
