White-Eared Humming-Bird

Trochilus leucotis

Named for the line of pure white that rises behind each eye above the ear feathers, this rare bird has a head of brownish violet shading insensibly into golden green. Azure blue lights the forehead, cheeks, and throat, a gorget of the clearest verdigris green covers the breast, and the underparts are grayish green; about three inches long, it inhabits Brasil and appears very rare.
