Volume 1, Plate V / Ornithology (Birds)
Northern Humming-Bird
Trochilus colubris
Hardiest of its family, this little bird ranges from tropical heat to the far north, arriving each spring to build a tiny lichen-clad nest and lay two white eggs. The males bear a throat that glows from black to fiery ruby, and though long thought to live on nectar alone, they dart tirelessly after small flies for much of their food.
