Addax
Oryx addax
Distinguished from the true oryxes by a croup higher than the shoulders, a neck mane, a throat tuft, and spirally twisted horns above two feet long, the Addax inhabits Nubia and the whole desert, traversing running sands on wide-spreading hoofs. Its body and limbs are white, the head and neck greyish-brown crossed by a white band, with chestnut hair between the horns; at some seasons the colour turns dull grey, and it stands fully three feet high.
