South African Cattle

The Caffres of the eastern coast of South Africa are a tall, elegant and superior race, subsisting chiefly on curdled milk and wild vegetables, their features approaching northern peoples and their colour ranging from black to bronze. Their weapons are the iron-headed hassagai, hurled thirty or forty yards, and the knobbed kerie used to kill small game; men go naked while women wear long button-studded skin cloaks, chiefs preferring leopard skins.
