Red and Blue Maccaw

Macrocercus aracanga

A large and splendid maccaw fully 39 inches long with a tail near 24, distinguished from its near relative by bright yellow middle wing-coverts and the absence of red facial plumes. Vermilion-red over head, neck, back, and breast, with azure-blue wings and rump and red-and-blue tail, it ranges through Guiana, Surinam, and Mexico, feeds on palm fruits in flooded savannahs, and nests twice yearly, laying two spotted eggs.
