Troglodytes niger

A native of the Guinea Coast and Angola, this large and powerful African ape is covered with shining black hair, longest upon the back and shoulders, with a naked, wrinkled face, prominent ears, and arms reaching below the knees. Adults are reported to attain five or six feet, living in vast troops and proving formidable even against the elephant, while the gentler young feed on vegetable food and fruit yet perish quickly in cold climates.
