Active Gibbon

Hylobates agilis

Inhabiting the forests of Sumatra and known as Ungaputi, this slender ape scarcely exceeds two feet seven or eight inches, with arms reaching the ground when erect, the upper body a clear chocolate-brown and the male bearing yellowish-white cheeks and brow. Endowed with surprising agility, it swings and throws itself between trees clearing forty feet at a bound; in confinement it grows easily frightened yet familiar, fond of being caressed, and lacks any guttural sack.
