Hoolock

Hylobates hoolock

A native of the Garrow Hills near Goalpara in British India, this long-armed ape lacks hip callosities and is blackish-brown sprinkled with grey, the adult bearing a band of grey over the eyes. It feeds on jungle fruits, the seeds of the Peopul tree, tender twigs, leaves, and insects, walks erect with rocking balance, swings rapidly through trees, and proves gentle, pacific, and easily tamed, living twenty-five to thirty years.
