Ateles paniscus

Inhabiting the forests of Guiana and Brazil, this black-haired monkey is covered with long, soft, silky hair and is, despite its agile form, among the most sluggish, moving slowly with deliberate, dragging motion. Its fore extremities want the thumb, and the long prehensile tail, tender-skinned beneath, grasps, suspends, and draws objects toward it; a related species hangs in grotesque groups from trees and is frequently eaten by the South American Indians.
