Cross-Fox of America

Vulpes decassatus

The cross-fox of America, perhaps only a variety of the red fox, was a large strong-limbed animal whose forehead, back, and thighs were a mixed yellow, black, and white forming a hare-like grey, with a black streak running down the back crossed at the shoulders, bright fulvous about the ears, white cheeks, ear-linings, and tail-tip, and sooty-black throat, belly, feet, and tail-base. Its colours grade insensibly into the grey and tri-coloured foxes, varying greatly between individuals.
