Alpine, or Great St. Bernard Dog & King Charles Spaniel

  • The Alpine, or Great St. Bernard Dog (left). The Alpine or Great St. Bernard dog, famed for rescuing travellers in the snowy passes toward Italy, is allied to the Newfoundland in form, stature, hair, and colours, though its head and ears resemble a water-spaniel’s, the breed mostly white with black or fulvous spots. A second race serving the same office has close short hair clouded with grey, liver-colour, and black; both carry baskets of food and wine from the Hospice, saving several lives each winter.
  • King Charles’s Spaniel (right). King Charles’s spaniel is a beautiful breed, generally black and white. It is presumed to be the parent of the cocker.
